A Photo worth A Thousand Words: Elders Stand in Bus While the Young Ones Fail to Offer Seats

The two girls don’t seem to care as they had their eyes glued to their phones.

Buses and trains can get really crowded especially during rush hour. Expect to see dozens of people willing to stand for hours as long as they reach their destination on time. But when people see elderly, handicapped, or pregnant women—it is the norm to give them their seats. However, one viral photo has left many dismayed and losing their faith in humanity.

In the photo, two elderly women can be seen standing, while two young girls sat nearby, playing with their phones and not paying attention to the two older women. While no one really likes standing for a 30- or 60-minute ride, for some elderly, pregnant, infant-accompanying, or handicapped passengers, that’s not just an unpleasant situation, but a painful, or even impossible, task.

Many netizens expressed dismay over the photo, saying the young girls should be ashamed of themselves. But some netizens believe people are judging them too quickly, especially when nobody really knows the story behind every person’s actions on the bus.

However, Oxford professor Sir Muir Gray, who is the clinical adviser to Public Health England, believes it is better for the older generation to stand up. Standing in buses and trains, and walking for at least 10 minutes can prolong their lives and keep them healthy.

The photo is continuing to spark debate after it was posted by Facebook page “Life”. The picture has reached more than 13,000 shares, and is still garnering more attention as people are divided in their opinions.
