14-year-old Russian Model Passes Away from Meningitis after Working for 13 Straight Hours

She was used to working at least 3 hours a day.

14-year-old Vlada Dzyuba from Russia was working in China for a 3-month assignment as a model. She then collapsed after working 13 hours straight during a gig, and never woke up.

Dzyuba apparently died from complications of acute cerebral meningitis, which was later linked to being overworked. She reportedly called her mother and complained of ‘utter exhaustion’ following a gruelling 13-hour Asian fashion show in Shanghai.

On the Russian TV channel NTV, her mother, Oksana, said, “She called me, ‘Mom, I’m so tired, I want to sleep so badly.’ It must have been the beginning of the illness, and then her temperature climbed, she had a fever. I could not sleep, and I called her constantly, begging her to go to the hospital. “

She then collapsed, and sadly, she never regained consciousness, dying two days later. Apparently, the teen was in a ‘slave labor’ contract without medical insurance and had been too ‘scared’ to seek hospital treatment.

More than 60 percent of the white-collar workers in large Chinese cities are faced with a risk of contracting maladies resulting from overwork, according to a survey carried out in 2010 by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and the Chinese Hospital Association.

The Kremlin’s human rights ombudsman in Perm, Pavel Mikov, said he was personally investigating the girl’s death.
