Selfless PUJ Driver Returns Fare Money of a Young Boy Who Didn’t Have Enough in His Pockets

The driver’s selfless act was lauded by netizens after learning of their story in social media.

In the Philippines, working as a taxi or jeepney driver does not yield much income. Yet, many drivers have no choice as they have to survive in a poverty-stricken developing country such as the Philippines. To make things harder, many drivers fall victim to criminals, and sometimes, even passengers get off without paying.

While others would refuse to let penniless people ride, this driver returned the money of a young boy who didn’t have enough fare money. Jonee Cañada was lucky to witness such a touching scene inside a PUJ that was en route Calamba – Biñan Hiway. A young boy was about to get on the jeep, but approached the driver first.


But before getting on the jeep, the boy, who apparently went to Parian Elementary School, showed the driver his 5-peso coin: “kuya eto lang po pamasahe ko”. (Sir, this is the only money I have for fare.)

“O ‘yan lang ba? O siya, sakay ka na,” the driver said. (That’s all you have?

The boy happily got on the jeep, and with a smile on his face, endlessly thanked the driver. Apparently, the driver returned the boy’s last money, and told him to use it for allowance instead.

“Toto, sa ‘yo na ‘yang limang piso mo, baon mo na ‘yan at mag-aral ka  nang mabuti ha. Wag mang-aaway ng kaklase,” the driver said.

(Keep your money, son. That’s your allowance. Study well, okay? Don’t get into fights with your classmates.)

Jonee was so touched by the driver’s selfless act that she decided to share the touching story on Facebook. She intended to show other users that there are still many good people in this world. Despite having nothing, the driver chose to help the boy, who seemed to be living in poverty as well.
